Americans and their giant vehicles. Exhausting.

Reading a review of a 2016 Ford Escape, I noticed the reviewer mentioned that it wasn’t big enough to tote around an infant and all the stuff he or she would require. Um, what?

Mentality like that is why there are so many Yukon XLs and Suburbans clogging America’s highways. Then, I see another post where a gentleman is looking for a family sedan because he has two toddlers and the commenters immediately suggest that the only acceptable option is a minivan.

For two kids, I can see that a minivan or a (shudder) big SUV would be easier. But it isn’t the only option. And for one kid, it’s downright dumb to buy a large vehicle solely because of the kid. Shoot, I was an infant and then toddler and my mom had a then-new ‘91 Chevy Corsica. And, we did just fine.

My wife’s CX-5 was bought because she wanted the economy and driving feel of a car but a little more ground clearance...and for it to be a future baby-mobile. If we can’t fit our future baby and his or her stuff in the CX-5, we have too much stuff. Plain and simple.

Or, I guess we could run out and buy one of these.

People go nuts when they have a child, apparently. Our Sonata does just fine with a 2 year old and a dog. A wagon would be better, but I have no need for a suburban as a family hauler. Hell, I’ve known people to make one child work with only a 2 door Civic or a Mustang.

We have three kids. Wife has an Expedition. It’s still packed full of crap on a weekend trip to grandma and grandpa’s house 2.5 hours away.

Wife wants back into an Enclave, though.

When I was little, I never noticed a lack of space when I would ride in my dad’s sedans. I would do fine with a sedan because it’s usually just me in the car.... Except I have a SUV

Cheap gas, cheap cars and this mentality that you get the most for your money if you get the biggest car possible.

I hate it. It killed off my beloved wagons.

We started with a Neon and a Mazda truck. Graduated to an Explorer when the kids got older.

We have an Equinox. It worked with our 2 kids, even toting her nephew. Now her sister had another kid & watching a neighbor’s kid once a week and we DO need more seating than just the rear 3.

I want a suburban for future tow use, but it appears that won’t be an option for our bank account. Looks like we’ll have to settle for a van.

Mind you we were ok with keeping what we had, but more responsibility requires more people hauling space.

To be fair, I loved my Yukon Xl (rip) and still love my Suburban. I need the truck for towing/hauling and the occasional ski/snowmobile trip up north. It's a terrible choice for a mommy mobile but there is nothing like it when it comes to hauling.

If it weren’t for the car seat physically not fitting, my mom was gonna tote me around in a Saturn SC2. Of course, the they went out and bought the Safari but actually had a somewhat valid reason; they wanted to be able to tow our pop-up and my dad only had a single cab truck.

Even the Vue was more than enough room since we shoved a family of four and a weeks worth of stuff in it to go to Florida.

Now, the ‘99 Tahoe my dad bought to replace the truck once it got stolen as well as the lifted Silverado are totally unneeded but hey, American gonna America.

Or you could go full euro and raise a family of five in a Beetle.

I understand the need for them as far as towing or working. My uncle has 2 older Suburbans he works out of as an electrician and they're great. I just don't feel it's smart when the young momma thinks she needs a big ass SUV to cart around 1 or 2 kids.

When my aunt used to visit before I was born, they had her and her husband, two kids, a dog, and a week’s worth of clothes and presents in a Honda Civic 1500.

Now with just her and her husband, they have a Sienna.

When I was 10-11, for a year dad’s car was a 91 Camaro V8, and mom’s was a 96 Camaro V6.

Now mom has an 03 Impala and dad has an 04 F150 FX4 crew cab.

My kid is 2, our primary family vehicle is my wife’s cx-5. I think it’s small. I used to think just like you, “why do folks buy a suburban when they get pregnant with their first kid. It makes no sense”. Well guess what, we rented an armada for a road trip from Miami to Key West and it was heaven. I don’t think I’m ready to dd a full size PU or SUV but I am looking at midsize pu’s like the taco, ridgeline and gm twins. That new armada from last night looks great too

My mom actually sold her Isuzu Trooper upon having a second kid because hoisting car seats up into a tall vehicle was a hassle.

I think part of the cause for this is America’s space. In most of the world it would feel a huge inconvenience to drive and park such a big car, but apparently not so in America.

Not sure why it hasn’t taken on in Australia, but thank god it hasn’t.
